A skilled toastmaster will ensure that everything runs smoothly on your wedding day.
A toastmaster is a great way of adding an extra sense of occasion to your big day and will give the wedding party and your guests the feeling that they are being looked after and that the event is under control.
Undecided if you need to book one for your wedding? I spoke to Stefan, The Tall Toastmaster who has given a fantastic insight into the benefits of hiring a professional toastmaster for your wedding.
Meet The Tall Toastmaster
Stefan, can you tell me a little bit about yourself?
I started my career in 2003 as a wedding co-ordinator at a country house hotel in Cheshire, as time went on I moved up the ranks and on to several different Hotels. I ended my time as Operation manager in 2011. This is when I decided to set up “The Tall Toastmaster”. I knew it was going to take several years to get established so I also worked for a very good friend of mine who had a chain of Coffee shops as Operations Manager. I decided to go full time as Toastmaster in 2020. In my spare time I like to build projects out of wood as a hobby. My wife is a Graphic designer, I have a young daughter and a cat called Lulu!
How did you become a Toastmaster and what got you into this profession?
Working in the hotel trade I bumped into a lot of Toastmasters at the weddings that I ran. I used to manage the Annual Christmas Luncheon for The Northern Guild of Toastmasters each year at one hotel. This got me talking to the guild members and they actually suggested for me to contact them when I would like a change of career, as they thought I would make it as a Toastmaster. So in 2012, I did. Eight years on I‘m a full member and was recognised as one of the North Wests top Toastmasters, winning ‘Best Toastmaster 2019’ in the County Brides’ awards.
You are a part of the Guild of Toastmasters – can you tell me a bit more about that?
I’ve been a member of the Northern Guild of Toastmasters for the seven years. The Guild was formed in Blackpool at the Imperial Hotel on the 1st April 1985 and has grown to have 45 Qualified Members that are all highly respected in the Industry. We have several meetings a year with the annual dinner to catch up and help each other! The great thing about being in the Guild is that I’ve learnt so much from the older generation that have the experience of over twenty years. It’s very important to have the support of such a talented group of professional people. We can recommend each other for jobs we are unable to do and know that the event will be ran at a high standard.
What exactly does a Toastmaster do at a wedding?
Having a Toastmaster at your wedding means that everything should go like clockwork! Having someone to look after you for most of the day who is independent to the venue has a massive impact. We can resolve problems before they become one, as we are focused on how the day runs and we also connect with all the other suppliers to work as a team for the couple. At the end of the day if everything goes smoothly and everyone is happy! The Toastmaster has done their job!
List of some of the duties below.
Welcome guests to the venue.
Make sure the groomsmen are present and dressed correctly.
Co-ordinated with venue and suppliers making sure everyone is on the same page.
Look after the bride and groom and their guests throughout the day.
Assist the photographer with any group shoots.
Make any announcements that are required.
Announce the couple into the room.
Look after the top table during the meal service.
Introduce speeches, cake cutting and first dance.
Be part of the day and make the guests feel relaxed and having a good time.
Be the problem solver!
What are the benefits for couples to hiring a Toastmaster?
Having a Toastmaster on their day means they have their very own PA! Their role is it
make things happen the way the couple have planned it. If anything needs to be changed on the day, on the spot the toastmaster can make the quick decisions to make things happen for the better and leave the wedding/function party free of any worry or concerns. If any one of the suppliers or team from the venue need help then the Toastmaster step in. We give the couple peace of mind that they have one person overseeing what’s going on, so they don’t have to worry about anything apart from enjoying their big day.
Do you only need one Toastmaster at a bigger wedding?
The rule of thumb is if the wedding is over 500, you would need two Toastmaster’s to coordinate the numbers.
What is your favourite thing about being a Toastmaster?
Making people happy! Walking away knowing you have done the best you can to make their day fantastic.
What would be your best piece of advice for couples?
Book a Toastmaster to take all that stress away! If something goes wrong let it go over your head and let the Toastmaster solve the problem. Do not let little things spoil your big day.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stefan for his time, having worked alongside Stefan on several weddings throughout my time at Peckforton Castle I can confirm he is a fantastic asset to your wedding day.
